WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY

To become a vehicle inspector in Australia, you need to have had your mechanical licence (MVTC or Motor Vehicle Tradesperson Certificate) for more than five years as well as a minimum of five years of hands-on experience as a mechanic excluding the apprenticeship duration.

MVTC has many different classes such as body maker, automotive electrician, panel beater, etc, however, the only certificate you must hold is Motor Mechanic Certificate. If you do not hold a motor mechanic certificate, you do not qualify for this course.

As for your experience, a letter from the employer or equivalent is needed to verify your qualifications before starting the course.

WHAT TYPES OF CERTIFICATES CAN YOU GET?

You can apply to become a Truck Inspector, Bus Inspector & Car Inspector in this course depending on what you want. Car inspection is different from the rest however if you become a truck inspector, you can qualify as a bus inspector as well by acquiring a few more skills regarding buses and their passenger safety.

Truck inspection and Bus inspection are both categorised as heavy vehicle inspections with the main focus on working on heavy diesel engines and heavy vehicle safety. You do not necessarily need to have experience in working on heavy vehicles however you need to hold an HR Class driver’s licence in Australia with complete confidence in driving all kinds of trucks and buses.

WHAT DO YOU LEARN IN THE VEHICLE INSPECTOR TRAINING COURSE?

The vehicle inspector training course will enhance your mechanical knowledge and enables you to detect the faults of the vehicle only by visual roadside inspection.

During the course, you will learn how to assess the health of the powertrain including engine and transmission, detect electrical problems, learn how to professionally test the 4WD gearbox and learn how to assess the clutch disc remaining without disassembly as well as detect the hidden issues of the vehicle even if they have been deliberately erased from the ECU.

After learning all the steps to assess the mechanical side of things, you will learn how to work with advanced diagnostic tools. This is not a normal OBD2 scan that you learn, rather you will learn how to read the engine live data, how to perform and understand the engine component test, engine timing assessment, VIN check, reprograming the ECU and much more.

Lastly, you will learn how to professionally inspect the body, find the point of previous collisions even if they have happened 20 years back, whether the paint is original or aftermarket as well as professional rust depth assessment.

After the above technical matters, you will learn how to report on the identified issues professionally and in a language that everyone without any mechanical knowledge understands as well as how to give professional recommendations to the buyers to assist them in making the final decision.

There are lots of other things that you need to learn to become a professional vehicle inspector and be able to attend tribunals and courts to support the clients who have received an unprofessional service from a service provider.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE COURSE?

The course includes both online and hands-on training sessions. On the online course, you will learn the theoretical sides of things and the hands-on training puts your knowledge to the test.

On many occasions, the hands-on training happens at real jobs and by dealing with real customers. You will learn how to professionally interact with customers, what your obligations and responsibilities are as well as how to inspect the third party’s vehicle without causing any damage and complaints from the client.

You will also learn how to inspect used vehicles at dealerships and auction yards as the method will be different and comes with certain limitations.

HOW LONG DOES THE COURSE TAKE?

As most applicants for this course are busy mechanics and have full-time jobs, we will work with each individual and offer a tailored session depending on the individual’s circumstances.

HOW CAN YOU QUALIFY AS A VEHICLE INSPECTOR?

After finishing the course, you will undergo a series of tests to evaluate your knowledge and expertise. The first step is the theory test which you will answer a few real-life scenario questions. Once you pass the theory test, you will need to perform some real inspections on real clients’ vehicles.

You will be accompanied by a senior trainer at all times and you will use Last Check’s public liability insurance in case any damage is caused by you on the vehicle however the trainer will have your back from start to finish and will step in when needed.

Once you pass both sessions, you will receive your certificate and will be ready to work on your own on real vehicles.
